Injuries of different kinds usually occur as a result of participation in exercise or the various forms of athletic activities. There are many reasons why sport-related injuries occurs. Contusions occur when bleeding occurs internally in the tissues because of damage to small blood vessels. Strains are caused by torn or overstretched muscle fibers. Overstretching of ligaments beyond their usual capacity causes injury in joints called sprain.

Puncture or abrasion to the skin causes wounds while breakage of bones cause bone fractures. Injury to the central nervous system of the spine causes spinal cord injury. Many athletes also experience cramps. These are caused by strong contraction of body muscles, which cause immense pain for a few minutes. The affected muscles can be massaged to eradicate the pain.

Since injury occurs commonly in professional games, most teams maintain a close relationship to the medical community, with many teams retaining team physicians. Sports Medicine is a subspecialty in the field Medicine that specializes in studying and researching injury in sport with the aim of preventing or reducing their level of severity. This field is evolving rapidly, especially with the advancements in technology.

Prevention is one of the methods used to combat injury in sport. There are several benefits associated with prevention, such as, longer duration of participation, better performance, reduced medical costs, and healthier athletes. Team trainers, individual athletes, sport teams, and coaches are therefore encouraged to take part in sport injury prevention programs

Three different categories of sport injury prevention have been formulated, that is, secondary, primary, and tertiary. The primary category is concerned with avoiding injuries in the first place. The secondary category deals with obtaining diagnosis and treatment the soonest after an injury has occurred. Finally, tertiary prevention deals with rehabilitation after traumatic injury.
